Hi Mark. Thanks for your comment and continual support of the site. In the last year I've had too many things creep up on me taking my time away from the site. So I decided to put that song on hold as it takes a while to memorize it. Sorry about that!
Scott...I play right handed and 90% of the time use traditional grip. I have made great strides in strengthening my weak hand and now find that my lead hand is the slower and less controlled one when playing multiple (3 or 4) strokes on a pad or snare drum. I have never read or heard of any other player with this issue. It seems to me that when players talk about the weak hand, it is automatically assumed the lead hand poses no technical problems. Am I the only one you have heard this from? By ... Read More

Mark, first of all kudos for doing such a basic plan of attack. I always work with my students (live and Skype) on finding out their technical weaker points and then MAKING THE WEAK POINTS INTO STRONG POINTS. For example...if you weak hand is the left hand, then for practicing I would try to use it more/start with it on every exercise etc. But it's rare when someones weak hand surpasses their stronger hand at least for the amount you are speaking of. That's actually why I prefer matched ... Read More

That's actually why I prefer matched grip, because on occasion when I'm working more on my weak hand, it will actually (only in SOME aspects) surpass the strong hand. When it does, I try to watch it and mirror it with the other hand that is temporarily the weaker hand....at least in that aspect. So then I go back and forth using different exercises (singles, doubles, triples) concentrating on whichever hand is weaker for THAT PARTICULAR AREA.. and trying to copy the feel (or the look and feel if one is using matched grip) until they both become identical in facility. All I can tell you is that it's worth it. It's so worth it to put in the time in numerous areas until one doesn't really have a stronger or weaker hand. This helps to change the whole way we approach the drum set, as we will have no particular bias for the left/right side of the set (including crash cymbals) only whatever sounds the best! hope that helps. Feel free to follow up with any questions either here or by email as it's such an important topic that you bring up. thanks
Hi^^ I've been drumming for 14 years, but I think I don't have any technique. I just can play some basic beats, fills. I'm not a pro musician, but I want to express something through drums, like talking. Searching some videos in Youtube, I found your paradiddlediddle lesson. Now I'm here, thank you for all the information you made. I will learn a lot from here. God Bless You!
Hi Scott and fellow percussion enthusiasts!! I am a long time drummer but am always trying to improve (I have a long way to go!). I really appreciate what you're doing here, I appreciate the clarity and insight to some of the basics I have either overlooked or ignored. Your videos are awesome and I love how mellow you are as I am the complete opposite, anyhow, I'm looking forward to indulging and expanding!! Peace from Idaho!!
